Sorry I have not written lately.
I am back on the beat as the Detroit News Pistons writer and it is a challenge I did not expect. But things change quickly in life and in the world of journalism.
Pistons beat writer Vincent Goodwill left the News to become the Chicago Bulls insider for Comcast Sports Net in Chicago. He writes and does television stand ups and I am happy for Vinnie because he did a great job for us and he needed an expanding role and more money of course.
The show must go on and the News wanted me to take over. I did not want to do it because being a Pistons, Tigers or Red Wings beat writer is quite the grind. I have radio and family. I had some public appearances and talks lined up for spring and did not know how I could get through it all. I came face to face with a 28,000 pound gorilla and did not know how I could or if I could wrestle the beast.
When I was the Pistons beat writer during the Bad Boys era I was single and in my 20s and 30s. I was full of energy and loved being on the road. Now I am 56 with children who are doing wonderful things and I want to see them and guide them. During this process I talked to my editors, wife, kids agent, friends, radio bosses and other family members and they gave me the strength and encouragement to get through this.
I will include you in on my journey because when you cover a team strange things happen. They already are.
So I will be in Washington D.C. this weekend and New Orleans and Houston the following week.
I am back on the beat. Is this really happening?
