Ohio State won the first national championship in the post playoff era.
One of the first questions asked is this good for the Big Ten? My answer is this is good for Ohio State. This is not good for the Big Ten. Ohio State crushed Oregon 42-20 Monday night and a monster has been born. Coach Urban Meyer proved to be the best coach in the game by winning the game a year earlier than he thought.
The Buckeyes won with a third string quarterback and turned the ball over four times which is amazing. These are numbers most schools don’t overcome. Ohio State did it with ease. And that is bad news for the rest of the Big Ten.
The only thing that can stop OSU, at least for next season, is complacency. But even while he stood on the victory podium Meyer talked about getting his players ready for next season. He did it after losing a Heisman Trophy candidate and he did it after losing to a poor Virginia Tech team.
Now coaches and players in East Lansing, Ann Arbor and Madison are on notice.
Ohio State is the king of the Big Ten and America.
Here is the danger. Ohio State already recruits well. Now every kid is going to want to go there. That includes kids from the state of Michigan.
I am sure they are celebrating this championship in the Big Ten offices because the conference overcame being a scrub conference. I just do not believe this is good news for the rest of the conference because a menacing monster is born.
