Memphis — It was fun being back on the Pistons beat this weekend.
I covered the Pistons 95-88 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies Saturday night at FedEx Forum. It is an annual ritual. I cover one road trip for Detroit News Pistons beat writer Skinny Vinnie Goodwill who does a wonderful job. But he needs a break now and then. I think the lad had a hot Saturday night date and did not want to complete the Pistons four-game road trip.
I was the Pistons beat writer from 1988 to 1994 which covered the peak of the Bad Boys era and the decline. I watched them win two titles and then I wrote many of the stories that chronicled the ugly breakup. It was why I was a part of the ESPN documentary on the Bad Boys. After that I became a columnist and feature writer.
It was very difficult being a beat writer and the toll of being on the road wore you down. I cannot tell you how many 6 a.m. wakeup calls I had after covering a game. I often did not walk into the hotel until 1 in the morning. The turn around was nutty. There are so many stories that I am sure I could write a book about it. I just don’t know who would buy it.
Sometimes I did not know where I was. I get the urge to hunker down for a season and grind it out during an 82-game season. However, I have this other gig called radio which prevents it. And I now have a family that does not want me on the road two to three nights a week.
It was fun to wet my appetite. It is also great to be returning home.
