Foolish pranks are the fun part of our state rivalry

It is rivalry week as Michigan and Michigan State churn towards Saturday’s annual show down at Spartan Stadium.

There has already been a bit of outrage because some sneaky Spartans painted the block M on Michigan’s campus green and spray painted the letters SU to create a bright and cheerful MSU. I have no problem with that. That is part of a rivalry.

You paint things. You do and say stupid stuff. For those who are offended I say wake up and relax. Someone should have been on guard to protect the block M just like the MSU marching band stands on guard to protect Sparty from someone painting it maize and blue.

This prank was harmless. The maintenance crew scrubbed down the block M and power washed away the other letters. Now it is nice and clean and gives us something to chuckle about.

Sparty has been vandalized twice in the last 18 months and over the years was painted in full Michigan body armor. Someone once painted a block M at Spartan Stadium the night before a Michigan-Michigan State game.

It’s no big deal to me. You just clean up and move on.
