Lions are a mystery team

A few years ago I spoke with former Lions defensive end defensive tackle Corey Redding and asked him what opponents would see in the Lions.

“They would see our play jumping off the tape,” he said.

He was smiling and excited and ready for a great regular season. I spoke to Redding in the visitors dressing room in Buffalo. It was the final preseason game of the 2008 season. The team finished 4-0 and actually appeared to be good. The entire franchise was excited and ready to go and kick ass.

Redding didn’t smile much the rest of the season.

It was the year the Lions finished 0-16 and that defense gave up 517 points. Head coach Rod Marinelli and President Matt Millen lost their jobs that year and the Lions began a new era of losing.

Here is my point. You cannot get a read on a team during the preseason. That is especially true now when the main goal for players is to get into shape and stay healthy. The Lions finished another preseason in Buffalo Thursday night and I do not have a read on this team.

My gut feeling says they are not very good. However, I believe head coach Jim Caldwell is hiding a lot of things. We may see an entirely different Lions team for the huge Monday Night spectacular in 10 days.

Calvin Johnson only played in one game. The starters barely lathered up outside of the third game against Jacksonville. My gut tells me 7-9 but I do not have a good feel about that.

Bring on the New York Giants. That is when you can get a read on this squad.
