I cannot tell you how many Lions training camps I have been to. With a few variations they are all the same.
Coaches stand on a podium and tell the media that the team is ahead of schedule. The players are soaking up information like a sponge and they are eager for the season to begin.
Players will tell us that the new coaches are better than the old coaches. They will tell us that the new wrinkles will make them better and make the team better.
Guys will run around in shorts and shoulder pads and say drills are faster, quicker and better.
Every coach is great. Jim Caldwell is a true professional and respects players. Jim Schwartz has that let’s break down the walls mentality. I even heard how Rod Marinelli really knows his stuff. And we know how that worked out.
Some years the defense taunts the offense. Some years the offense taunts the defense. And every year tired, hot and angry linemen get into fights on the line of scrimmage.
I will run into fans who will shout 12-4 or 10-6 to me. I really ignore the ones that shout “Super Bowl bound.”
Yes, I’ve seen it all and heard it all. And this year’s training camp won’t change. But guess what? I love it all the same.
