I will admit that I am both curious and excited about being on national television Thursday night.
What clips will they use? How many times will I be on? What stories will I tell?
I am going to be on ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary on the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys that airs from 8-10 pm on ESPN Thursday night. I was the beat writer for The Detroit News when the Pistons won NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. It was the most unique team with the most characters I’ve ever covered.
I also want to share the moment with you. I am hosting a viewing party Thursday night at the downtown Buffalo Wild Wings located near Greektown. The folks at the Buffalo gave us an upstairs room and I will get there around 7 pm. The event lasts until 11 and there is no cover charge. I am asking people to bring blanket material for a cause I’ve been involved with for a year.
I found some ladies who will turn the material into blankets for the homeless and women shelters around metro Detroit. You can also donate to Enchanted Barn a charity my old trainer Melissa founded where she brings troubled inner city youth to her farm to teach them to be better people.
Or you can just show up, eat wings, drink beer and enjoy the documentary.
Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn and John Salley are the main parts of the documentary. They are the ones that gave their blood and sweat to the cause. However, a total of 40 people were interviewed for the piece. I talked to director Zak Levitt for 2 1/2 hours downtown during the summer and he asked me things all the way from my childhood to when the Pistons broke up into pieces.
He’s won awards for his film making and said this is one of the better ones he’s done. I am betting on the guy. I look forward to seeing the finished product and look forward to sharing the evening with you.
