What kind of day is it in sports?

Today is a good day because it is official that Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is moving back to first base after a two-year stint at third. This is a natural fit for him and hopefully Miggy regains the nice glove he had at first before the Tigers signed Prince Fielder.

This automatically makes the Tigers infield better defensively. I noticed last season Fielder switched to a first basemen mitt the size of a tennis racquet. But it did not help his defense.

** Today is a bad day because Michigan State got destroyed by North Carolina at home. It was obvious that after losses to UAB and Belmont that the Tar Heels were ticked off. The Spartans simply got beaten up on the boards and were out hustled and out muscled. Usually it is the other way around and now coach Tom Izzo has selling points to drill into his team for the next few weeks. UNC was a far better team and MSU will certainly drop out of the top spot in the polls.

** Today is a good day because daughter Celine is preparing to play her first unofficial high school game this weekend for West Bloomfield against Walled Lake Central. This is her freshman season and she is hoping to show coaches she belongs on varsity. My how time flies.

** Today is a bad day because you can feel old man winter turning the corner to say hello. We actually enjoyed a nice balmy day on Wednesday. Now the winds of change are coming. Bundle up my friends.

** And finally today is a good day because the Lions are in first place and should win the division. Their closest competitors Chicago and Green Bay are in shambles because of injuries to their quarterbacks. It sure would be nice to experience the first home playoff game downtown at Ford Field.
