Jim Leyland won’t get credit for making right moves

Tigers manager Jim Leyland made all the right moves during a nail biting 3-2 victory over the Oakland A’ in the first game of the American League Division Series.

But he won’t get credit for it. We only remember the big blunders. He rode starter Max Scherzer until he ran out of steam. He brought in Drew Smyly who was good and he got a four-out save from Joaquin Benoit who called it a career highlight.

** The one move I did not like came from third base coach Tom Brookens. Why oh why do you wave slow motion Victor Martinez to the plate in that situation? This was not Coco Crisp rounding the bases. And what is wrong with having the bases loaded with one out and Andy Dirks coming to the plate with a 3-0 lead?

The Tigers could have ended the game and avoided the drama at the end. I have no problem with the Tigers being aggressive, but you are aggressive with Torii Hunter or Austin Jackson, not Prince Fielder or V-Mart.

** The Big Ten is bad this season. I get it. But I still get excited for the first game of the season. Michigan plays host to Minnesota at Michigan Stadium and Michigan State has a tough road game at Iowa. The preseason has become a joke. For both schools there was Notre Dame and a bunch of garbage. At least in the conference season these are games that put you in position to challenge for the Big Ten title.

The other games are simply money makers.

** Cheap plug but this is my blog. We will show The Spartans, Wolverines and Tigers today at my bar and restaurant Foster’s Smokehouse on Utica Road and 14 Mile in Fraser. Ask what is on special and enjoy good food and meet a couple of new friends.
