Hey $&*((%$. I hope you die violently on the air

Written By: Terry Foster | August 16, 2013

A few years ago 971 FM began something called Ticket Text where listeners to the show are allowed to send text to the Valenti and Foster Show along with the other on air personalities.

Behind the vile of anonymity people call Mike and I the worst names imaginable. People string together the worst racial slurs to degrade me and blacks that you can think of. It is not a now and then thing. It happens every day.

The same happens with Mike and his Italian ancestry.

From day one we were told our show was an abortion and that we would last six months to a year. That was 10 years ago.

We were told we would never beat the popular afternoon show Stoney and Wojo on 1130 AM. We finally did that. And that was before we went FM.

We were told that 971 FM made a huge mistake replacing Deminski and Doyle with us.  We shattered their ratings and survived. Talkers Magazine named us one of the top five most influential sports talk shows in America.

Now that there is a new sports station in town we are told that our run of being number one in the market for nearly seven years running is about to come to an end. And when that happens we will be out in the streets, out of a job.

But there are 32-34 stations in town. You mean to tell me that if we finish number two or number three we will get fired?

Some how we continue to survive.

The vast majority of people support Mike and I but I wanted to let you in on the dirty little secret of the media. Mike and I are sometimes like Duke, the New York Yankees or the Miami Heat. We do a good job but some people will hate on you because of your success or opinions.

That’s OK. I feed off the people that appreciate what we do. The bottom line is our job is to entertain the poor SOB that has a 45 minute afternoon commute. We are here to entertain the truck driver, insurance man and anybody else whose job is to hit the road to earn a living.

The other day a guy wrote me and said I probably did not care but that he loves me and Mike. I wrote him back and said I do care. Kind words are nice to hear because they remind you that you have supporters out there.

Thank you.

As much as I MOSTLY disagree with Mike, I tune in. And I will continue to tune in to y’all instead of Drew. His show is for the people with a 13 y.o. mentality.

I tune into 105.1 to listen to Sports News, not whatever silly pet peeve completely unrelated to sports you want to talk about.

Start doing your job and maybe I’ll listen again.

I think for every negative comment or message you get, there are at least 10 appreciative listeners/readers. It’s easier and more fun to spew negativity. Keep up the good work T-Fos!

Drew Lane has been #1 in this city for 20+ years. Detroit is the only city in America where Howard Stern didnt dominate because of Drew Lane! But you’re the Miami Heat and the NY Yankees? Keep telling yourselfs that if it makes you feel better

Of course you take things out of context. He was number one in the morning. We were number one in the afternoon. My point was why do some people hate us. I am sure drew gets the same thing. So next time you want to bitch at me put it in context.

I’m a 97.1 Ticket listener from now until it goes off the air.

Even then, Terry, please don’t take this the wrong way, but Gator is my favorite Ticket personality.

Duke, New York Yankees and Miami Heat? That’s hilarious. More like Charlotte Bobcats, Houston Astros and Jacksonville Jaguars.

I turned on Drew’s new show the other day while you guys had on the Tigers. I lasted 15 minutes. Not my humor, and that’s nothing against Drew, just I feel that I’ve become a more cultured ( well, by entertainment standards) listener by tuning into Terry and Mike. Gonna miss Diesel, and will probably tune into his show when it starts, if that is where he’s truly going. You’re show, and the station as a whole is great, but for the love of Christ, that morning show has to go. Stoney is fine, having grown up listening to him and Wojo as a kid, but Bill and Sara are killing him. Move Jamie, or bring in Sean Baligian to do the morning drive show, but until bill and Sara are gone, I’ll find my morning commute radio on NPR. Terry, you and Mike keep doing what you’re doing, and I can’t wait for the football kickoff luncheon show that should be coming up soon.

You guys beating 1130 had more to do with them being stale (mainly Stoney/Wojo) than you being good. Sorry…in their prime they were the best.

I will never listen to your show for one reason: Valenti’s idiotic stance on his love of imports (more so his vocal blathering about his right not to buy American). If it’s his right to be an idiot (an refuse to support the community he depends on)…it’s my right to boycott your station for employing such an idiot. I’ll just listen to XM/Sirius until a good alternative shows up.

If we are so bad then how did we beat the other 34 stations in town? If we are so bad how did we become the first sports show to be number one in the market? If we are so bad then how were we number one in the market for seven years? If we are so bad why does the station continue to renew our contracts? If we are so bad then why do you listen?

You have zero competition. Just thank your lucky stars that Clear Channel was so cheap long ago that the pulled the rug from under WDFN.
You had better hope that the new station stays cheap and that the Sports teams don’t attempt to shop the broadcasting rights…you might just eke out a couple more years.

BTW…at least you didn’t make apologies for the idiot stance of your co-host.

        Until then…Sirius/XM all the way.

How can you say we have zero competition? There are 32-34 stations in metro Detroit. That is competition. We are not competing against just sports stations. We are competing against news talk, sports, music and all types of competition. Sports shows generally do not lead the market. So we do have competition

You keep referring to your show as a “sports show.” It’s not a sports show. Your show appeals to the lowest common denominator. You’ve made it clear, repeatedly, that all that matters are ratings. Your show gains ratings by turning over the programming to the callers. I can program your show for you. “Last night, I went out to dinner and found a hair in my salad. What’s the strangest thing you’ve found in your food at a restaurant? 248-whatever the number is. Clyde from Fenton…you’re on the air.” Yeah, that’s brilliance.

          • Terry Foster Says:

It is a sports show. We talk Lions, Tigers Pistons Michigan and Michigan State. It is called talk radio. We allow the fans to be involved. We voice our opinions. We entertain. We challenge people. We make people think. We do not always talk sports. We are well rounded. What are we doing that is so wrong?

You morons are number one because its the only sports option in Metro Detroit until 105.1 came along..

97.1 has commercials all day that say – Sports talk, ALL DAY LONG.. yet from 6am until 10 am there is ZERO sports talk. Stoney and Bill are a complete joke and that fat slob sara must be the WORST personality on radio today.

Terry and Mike attempt to talk sports but its a sham because they fool you listeners into thinking they are smart.

Competition is here now.. I don’t care if 105.1 just plays ESPN radio most of the day, at least its not something stupid like ‘which 80′s movie is your favorite, or what is your pet peeve that your wife does’ crap that 97.1 just loves to spew out daily
    F You 97.1

We are in competition against everybody and managed to finish number one. So there is competition. Before we came along no sports show ever finished number one. So how do you explain that we did it?
I’ve listened to the competition. They quite often do not talk sports. I don’t hear you beefing about them. You have an agenda against us. That is your problem

You keep asking the same question, and the answer hasn’t changed. Sports shows don’t talk about taking their kids to dance recitals or letting Myron from Roseville chime in with his opinion on whether Monica Conyers should be in jail or not. To be honest, you keep saying you welcome the competition but it seems as if you’re whistling past the graveyard. Your station’s format is behond stale…and the same thing will befall you that happened with DFN. I liken the ratings argument to be similar to saying that American Idol or Dancing with the Stars are better shows than Mad Men or Breaking Bad. If ratings and not quality are the goals, then congratulations.

            1. The other station just started. 2. The other station has had more interviews in their first week than your station has in three years. 3. You must be concerned that you won’t be able to phone in your show anymore since you continue to argue about this. And lose, frankly. P.S….interesting you didn’t even attempt to dispute the quality versus ratings point. Tantamount to admitting your
            station is awful

          • Terry Foster Says:

Our show is better. I stand by that. I believe in it. Bottom line

  12. Patrick Says:

I am sorry for all the I’ll will towards you guys. My one point if everyone hates you guys so bad then just change the channel and not listen. It’s not that hard to do. I don’t get to listen as much as I want but you guys are great and you make me laugh each day I listen. I love listening to Mike as he gives his opinions and he sticks to them. Keep up the good work guys.

I never said everybody hates us. We get so much support it is amazing. But there are a small minority that try to make things miserable for you. My point is we’ve been told we would fail all the way by some. We have not. We do a pretty good job. I just wanted to give you behind the scenes. That’s all. We get some pretty vicious people. But all shows do.

Terry, let me start by saying i’ve been a 97.1 fan for as long as i can remember. if i had to rank the shows, it would be Doug and Gator, you and mike, and then the morning show, but mainly because doug and gator get me through my workday and you and mike get me through the last hour of work and my ride home. But i was a long supporter of you and mike, but i had alot of disdain for you after the DLS article a few years back. Being a grad and played sports for them, i took it to heart and was more upset at you and at my alma mater for how they handled the whole situation. Basically it turned me off from you guys and I listened to Sirius for the year subscription i had. Well my year was up and i slowly went back to 97.1. Terry, i’ll be honest after the whole article, i badmouthed you alot to my friends, alot of whom were former DLS grads as well. but when i started listening to ya’ll again, you won me back. i have no ill will towards you anymore, and you, along with doug, gator and even the new yorker Mike, exemplify detroit and our great sports town.
So keep it up Terry, ya’ll are doing great work. Show is even better now then when i stopped listening a year or so ago.

Thank you for returning to the show. I know I am going to write things that anger people. My job is not to make you feel warm and fuzzy every day. But let me tell you one of my motivations for the DLS story. It was to wake the boys up and make them realize some things in life are not cool and that they could be putting themselves in danger. There were some people that wanted to come over and teach the student body a lesson. They did not and I am happy about that. You cannot say anything you want in certain situations — even at a sporting event.

Funny all these people hating on YOUR blog. I think they secretly love you T-Fos. Why else would they waste their time. Just like the old adage says, haters gonna hate! I know your not the type of dude that will take this to heart. Just stay to true to your heart and you’ll be fine no matter if your first or 34th. But if your 34th your not getting a ribbon for that!

I envy you guys because you get to talk sports or whatever you want. If you need a Hockey contributor just let me know I can talk hockey all day long! Tell these haters to fly a kite!

Thank you for the nice note. People should appreciate what they have here. There are so many towns where the sports talk is sub par. They do not have hosts that care. And they lack sports fans with passion. Continued success to you. Hopefully you make it to the bright lights soon.

Sometimes I just don’t know how you guys deal with all of these clowns on a daily basis. Sometimes miserable people just need to do anything they can to try and bring you down. I have been to a lot of other big “sports cities” and I am generally a sports talk/general talk radio listener. I mean this when I say it, there is not a station that I have come across that holds a candle to 97.1 in my opinion. Keep doing what you guys do best!
