Valverde is unraveling like a cheap suit

Jose Valverde sent us on another ride on the wild mouse and even his strongest supporters cannot simply say “Well he got the job done. What is the big deal?”

This was not a case of Valverde being good as he closed out the Tigers 3-2 victory over Kansas City Tuesday night. It was a case of Valverde being lucky. I don’t care what anybody says. Papa walked Royals designated hitter Billy Butler with a man on second and nobody out.

He threw the man ball four and instead of it being runners on first and second with nobody out, the Royals had a man on second with one out and watched as Butler was ejected for arguing the call. The blown call made it a lot easier on Valverde as he retired the last two men.

This cannot last. This will not last.

What do you do when you see a ticking time bomb?

You slowly turn around, back away and call for help. It is what the Tigers need to do but they will not do it because they are in it to win it with Valverde. They are all in at the poker table even though the dealer is showing three kings.

This cannot last. This will not last.

The Tigers will win the American League Central Division. They are too strong to blow this 5 1/2 game lead. But can they win playoff games with Valverde  as the closer? I suppose they can if they lead by three or more runs in the ninth innings.

Valverde is unraveling like a cheap suit in the rain. We might not see all the stitches fall apart in the regular season. But at some point we will.
This cannot last. This will not last.
