The Great Gabby is all grown up and running it in Walled Lake

Walled Lake — The first time I met the Great Gabby, she was about five years old. She was a shy little kid with big eyes that loved playing with my daughter Celine during parties. I got more smiles than words from her.

During one of The Great Gabby’s birthday party Celine ate too much chocolate cake and was growling all night because the sugar kept her awake. It brought a smile to the Great Gabby’s face.

Now she is all grown up.

On a comfortable Friday night at Walled Lake Central High School The Great Gabby showed out and showed up everybody during Walled Lake’s city track and field champions. She ran with confidence. She ran within herself and I was told she even held some things back for bigger upcoming track meets.

She is the star track athlete at Walled Lake Central and we witnessed The Great Gabby’s greatest performance to date. The Great Gabby, aka Gabriel Edwards, was named Most Outstanding track star after winning the 200 and 400-meter events and anchoring relay wins in the 4×400, 4×2000 and the 4×100 events. She even ran down two criminals and placed them into headlocks until police arrived.

OK. I made that last one up.

She’s done this before however. The Great Gabby was MVP her freshman and sophomore seasons. Only an injury prevented the four peat her junior year.

The Great Gabby is headed to Bowling Green to run track. She looks like a track athlete. But I could not help but see the remnants of a tiny kid that helped my daughter win a potato chip battle and walk around a party with chocolate icing all over her face. My how they grow.
