Jimmy Howard joins Red Wings goalie hot seat

Mike Vernon. Chris Osgood. Cujo. Tim Cheveldae. The Dominator.

Now it is Jimmy Howard’s turn to join the Red Wings goalie hot seat. Fans are blistering Howard following the Wings 5-4 overtime victory in Game 2 of their Stanley Cup opening round series against the Anaheim Ducks. The series is tied 1-1 heading into Saturday’s game at Joe Louis Arena.

I cannot sit here and defend Howard because there were a couple of shaky goals that he probably should have stopped. When you are up 4-1 in a playoff game it should be on lock down. But the Wings allowed Anaheim to tie the game 4-4 to send it into OT. It is all Howard’s fault, according to the talk show radio fans.  The funny thing is few mention how the Wings defense was totally overwhelmed and made it appear as if the Ducks were on the power play the final minutes of the third period.

It always comes down to the goalie in this town because that is what we do. I even heard complaints about Howard in the opening game3-1 loss. He basically gave up two goals and played well. But the Wings did not win and it always come down to the goalie. Howard needs to get used to it. He signed a six-year deal and he is going to be the hero when the Wings win (most of the time) and he will be a zero when he gives up what is considered a soft goal.

I look forward to the ride. But I’ve seen it before with every starting Red Wings goalie since Terry Sawchuk. He is considered the greatest goalie in Red Wings history. I am sure if he played today some fat slob would be calling him a slob.

Get used to it Jimmy. It’s nothing personal. It’s just what we do.
