Papa Grande is back. The Red Wings are back in the playoffs and the Lions are on the clock.
What a wonderful time for sports. We have things to talk about. We have arguments to hash out. The water cooler is probably three deep as a wet and cold spring turns into a nail biter.
Be honest. How many of you thought you’d not only see Jose Valverde as closer for the Tigers but that he’d pitch a painless and care free 1,2,3 inning. The last time Valverde pitched a 1,2,3 inning most of us were in diapers. There were no heart attacks at Comerica Park as the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5 and we were able to keep the Tums in the coat pocket.
But what an incredible ride. Valverde goes from pitching to kids fighting acne to returning to the Major Leagues. And thank God he turned down all those lucrative offers from the New York Yankees and New York Mets. Oh it didn’t happen? He lied about it? Ahhhh who cares? He pitched a pain free 1.2.3 inning.
And did you see the Red Wings come from behind to beat the Los Angeles Kings and move into the eighth and final playoff spot? Call he crazy, but I want to see the Wings stay in the eighth spot and play the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Who the heck wants to see Anaheim? Who the heck wants to stay up until one in the morning? Not me. Bring on the Blackhawks.
And the NFL draft is tonight. This has been called the Lions Super Bowl. But do you know that the Lions have been the second worst drafting team behind only the Cleveland Browns. ESPN the Magazine ran a story that said the Lions draft so poorly that they’d be better off skipping the draft. I remain hopeful that the Lions pick up Central Michigan University tackle Eric Fisher but he probably won’t be there.
So for the 10th straight year I root for the Lions to select defense but I am prepared for the best available wide receiver.
Papa Grande is back. The Red Wings are in the last playoff spot and the Lions are on the clock. Does it get any better than this?
